What insulating oil is generally used for

2024-08-09

Insulating oil has a wide range of applications in the power industry and is mainly used in the following areas:
Transformer: Insulating oil is used in transformers to provide insulation and cooling. It can fill the voids in the transformer, prevent air or moisture from intruding, and ensure the reliable insulation of the transformer.
Oil circuit breaker: in the oil circuit breaker, insulating oil plays the role of arc extinguishing, can quickly and reliably cut off the arc, prevent the arc from expanding, prompting the arc to quickly extinguish.
Oil-filled cables: insulating oil is used in cables to insulate and cool the role of maintaining a good thermal cycling circuit to achieve the purpose of cooling exothermic.
Power capacitors and casing: insulating oil is also used in power capacitors and casing to insulate and impregnate, fill air bubbles in the insulation and prevent moisture intrusion.
Capacitors: In capacitors, insulating oil plays the role of energy storage, while preventing moisture intrusion, filling the voids in the solid insulating material, so that the insulation of the equipment has been strengthened.
In addition, the insulating oil can be refined from mineral oil, can also be synthetic or from animal and vegetable oils. It is usually made from deeply refined lubricant base oil with antioxidant modulation, and is mainly used as dielectric for electrical equipment. The main properties of electrical insulating oils include low temperature performance, oxidative stability and dielectric loss.
The global insulating oil market size reached $16,919 million in 2021 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.92% through 2027. This indicates the wide range of applications of insulating oils in the power industry and other sectors across the globe and the continuous growth in market demand.
