Is transformer oil the same as insulating oil?

Transformer oil and insulating oil overlap in definition and use, but are not identical.
Definition and composition: Transformer oil is a fractional distillation product of petroleum, mainly composed of alkanes, cycloalkanes saturated hydrocarbons, aromatic unsaturated hydrocarbons and other compounds. It has good insulating properties, heat dissipation and arc dissipation, and is usually used for insulation and cooling of transformers. Insulating oil, on the other hand, is a special kind of lubricant mainly used to prevent electrical short circuits, leakage and breakdown between equipment components such as transformers and cables. Insulating oils generally contain a large number of aromatic hydrocarbons, alkanes and olefins and other compounds, with good antioxidant stability, and can effectively prevent the generation of acidic substances and sludge.
Use: Transformer oil is mainly used for insulation and cooling of transformer, and also has good lubricating properties and stable thermal properties. It plays the role of cooling and isolating the electric field between the conductor and insulator in the high temperature and high pressure environment inside the transformer to ensure the normal work of the whole system. The main use of insulating oil is as an insulating material for wires, cables and all kinds of transformers, which can efficiently prevent the occurrence of electrical short-circuit and leakage phenomena.
Treatment: Since both insulating oil and transformer oil contain hazardous components, there is a big difference in the way they are treated. Insulating oil is generally treated by pyrolysis, while transformer oil requires in-depth treatment, including physical or chemical methods to remove harmful substances, and then efficient filtration and adsorption and other process measures.
In summary, although both transformer oil and insulating oil have good insulating properties, there are differences in their composition, use and treatment. Transformer oil is mainly used for insulation and cooling of transformers, while insulating oil is more widely used for insulation of wires, cables and other equipment.
